South Metro Atlanta

Automated Transit Network Demonstration Pilot

Our first public operating system will be located in South Metro Atlanta.

The 0.5-mile Automated Transit Network (ATN) Demonstration Pilot will link the SkyTrain at the Georgia International Convention Center to the Gateway Center Arena along a dedicated guideway, showing the residents and visitors of South Metro Atlanta how Automated Transit Networks can improve how people move.

Why South Metro Atlanta?

A 2019 feasibility study conducted by the ATL Airport Community Improvement Districts (AACIDs) identified the area around the Atlanta airport, including Georgia International Convention Center, as a 24/7 mobility district with gaps in first- and last-mile connectivity and the presence of unserved or underserved populations, limiting access to jobs, events and transit.

Glydways’ Automated Transit Network can improve access and support economic growth, in partnership with the ATL Airport Community Improvement Districts (AACIDs).

What’s Next?

With construction kicking off in February 2026, the project will move through guideway installation, vehicle testing, and system commissioning ahead of target passenger rides starting in December 2026.

The pilot will demonstrate the technology, support rider adoption, and validate the capability of the Glydways ATN to promote transit access in underserved parts of South Metro Atlanta.

Project
Timeline

  • 2018-2019

Informed by years of global research into emerging transportation modes, ATL Airport Community Improvement Districts (AACIDs) commissions a Transit Feasibility Study to define a Mobility District and analyze the viability of emerging modes.

The study identified two primary gaps in existing transit services: inadequate first- and last-mile connectivity and the presence of unserved or underserved populations. To address these gaps, the study recommended piloting three solutions: Microtransit, Autonomous Shuttles, and an Automated Transit Network (ATN); to evaluate their viability for expanding the transit footprint in the region.

  • 2023

A Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) was signed among MARTA, Fulton County, Clayton County, City of College Park and Airport West and Airport South CIDs to establish a Governance Committee to work collaboratively to improve mobility and connectivity through testing and implementation of transit infrastructure, technology, and services to make it easier to live, work, and play in the AACIDs and surrounding areas.

AACIDs releases a Request for Proposal (RFP).

  • 2024

Following a competitive procurement process, AACIDs selects APRTS consortium, led by Glydways, ACS Iridium, and Flatiron, to develop the Automated Transit Network (ATN) Pilot Project.

  • 2026

Construction begins on the 0.5-mile dedicated guideway and the demonstration pilot launches to offer live passenger service, and test scalability, performance, and community benefit. Operations scheduled to launch in late 2026.

  • 2027

An operational South Metro Atlanta pilot delivering transit service, real-world feedback, and continuous system refinement.

  • 2027

Potential system expansion into South Metro, enhancing transit connectivity throughout Fulton and Clayton Counties.
